I think I still have a book of Christmas poems somewhere. Always a nice touch to the season.
"Maybe Christmas," he thought, "doesn't come from a store. Maybe Christmas perhaps, means a little bit more!"

Many of us know the song "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day". But not as many know it was adapted from a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and was centered on the time of the American Civil War. Here is it's entire length...

I heard the bells on Christmas Day
    Their old, familiar carols play,
    And wild and sweet
    The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And thought how, as the day had come,
    The belfries of all Christendom
    Had rolled along
    The unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Till ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day,
    A voice, a chime,
    A chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Then from each black, accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,
    And with the sound
    The carols drowned
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

It was as if an earthquake rent
    The hearth-stones of a continent,
    And made forlorn
    The households born
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

    And in despair I bowed my head;
    "There is no peace on earth," I said;
    "For hate is strong,
    And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!"

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
    "God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
    The Wrong shall fail,
    The Right prevail,
With peace on earth, good-will to men."
"Maybe Christmas," he thought, "doesn't come from a store. Maybe Christmas perhaps, means a little bit more!"

Maybe we should all take a quick break from the retro and come up with our own original poems for this 'very different' Christmas. What do you think?

This one kind of came to me this morning. I think you will all recognize the adaptation for this unique Christmas season...

    The Pandemic Before Christmas.

    Twas the night before Christmas,
as I roam through the house.
All the guest rooms are empty,
no one in the morn to rouse.

    My wife’s in bed sleeping,
    after a Christmas Eve kiss.
    While the snow is falling,
    to nature nothings amiss.

    I sigh inside deeply,
    as I ponder this year.
    As a virus and unrest,
try to rob us of cheer.

Yet a day comes to mind,
when only three could be found.
    A couple and newborn,
    with animals all around.

    But before others would visit
and let the good news be known.
In the serenity of the moment,
    they were still not alone.

    The angels were there,
though they could not be seen.
    To comfort the parents,
    of the world’s newborn King.

    On this Christmas we separate,
    by caution or fear.
    Loved ones far away,
    but our Father is near.

Let not your heart be troubled,
    by things far from sight.
    But Merry Christmas to all
and to all a blessed night.
"Maybe Christmas," he thought, "doesn't come from a store. Maybe Christmas perhaps, means a little bit more!"

    Well done, Bishop!

I used to write poems for my family members every Valentine's Day, but that ability has seemingly left me.
The holly's up, the house is all bright, The tree is ready, the candles alight; Rejoice and be glad, all children tonight.
