Buenos Aires, Argentina- Christmas here is at the beginning of their summer- hot, humid and sunny. The main celebration is on Christmas Eve (Nochebuena), rather than Christmas morning. After a big family dinner, gifts are exchanged and at midnight church bells and fireworks go off all over the city. Santa often makes an appearance at homes and at malls, but other traditional things like caroling and 24-hour Christmas music on the radio don't happen here.

The holly's up, the house is all bright, The tree is ready, the candles alight; Rejoice and be glad, all children tonight.

Cape Cod, Ma: There are few things more picturesque than lighthouses decked to their nines in Christmas garlands, wreaths, and lights. What's more, the quaint seaside destination hosts dozens of craft fairs, parades, theater productions, and even a Train to Christmas Town.

Dusseldorf, Germany- in the run up to Christmas the air at Dusseldorf's Christmas Market is filled with the smell of roasted almonds and hot mulled wine. Every booth has a different theme and there's a large variety of goods on offer. They see it more as their Christmas World, rather than just a market.

Essex, Ct -There are plenty of reasons to visit Essex at Christmastime. Ride the North Pole Express, then keep things locomotive-themed at the annual Holiday Train Show, or do some Christmas shopping at the holiday village where you can also catch a stunning light show. Have dinner or even stay at the historic Griswold Inn for the perfect New England holiday.

Even though it's only about an hour away from me, I've never gone there at Christmas time. I've only done the dinner train a couple times in the fall, during the height of the foliage. It is charming.

Fethiye, Turkey- this is a Muslim city, but more and more Christmas decorations and Santas are showing up each year in shops and restaurants, even signs that say Merry Christmas in Turkish: 'Mutlu Noeller'. Father Christmas (Noel Baba) was born in Turkey, but he traditionally brings gifts to children there on New Year's Eve (one of their biggest holidays). December 24 and 25 are just regular work days.

Harare, Zimbabwe- their celebration starts on Christmas Eve at midnight mass. After mass, there is a feast at home with family and friends- the traditional meal consisting of chicken, rice and vegetables. Christmas Day sees them visiting and exchanging gifts.

Cologne, Germany: Nothing embodies old-world yuletide charm like the Christmas market, and nobody takes Christmas markets more seriously than the Germans, with Cologne’s festivities drawing some four million visitors each winter... Cologne, Germany.jpg

Prescott, Arizona. Known as Arizona's Christmas City. In 1989, then Governor, Rose Mofford, designated Prescott as Arizona’s Christmas City because of our festive lighting ceremony, But, the festivities don't begin and end with just one event. Prescott celebrates with lights, music, and festive flair from November-January.Prescott Arizona.jpg
