Those who do actually bake fruitcakes. When do you begin to make them?

Years ago I went to make plum pudding and then saw that it was basically a fruitcake, so that ended that.
I don't think I realized that it doesn't have plums in it. I just learned that it was called that because the pre-Victorian people called raisins 'plums'.
I do like how the early plum pudding recipes had fat in them (though suet doesn't sound appetizing), that with the heavy spices. But looking at the recipes listed here, I guess it's not the same as fruitcake.
The holly's up, the house is all bright, The tree is ready, the candles alight; Rejoice and be glad, all children tonight.
Does not sound like it. I am contemplating getting a "freshly" made fruitcake this year if I can find a local bakery that makes them. Got to try it at least one more time... lol

Seriously, Ornament maven's recipe is very good. Full disclosure, I did make some changes (I didn't have the candied fruit, so I used drained Maraschino cherries), but everyone really liked it. If I didn't have to work this Christmas, I would probably be making it again this year.
May have to give it a shot then, Though I am a much better cook than baker... lol

never liked fruitcake as a kid, now as an old man I love it.
Last few times I tried it, I still did not care for it, but some have said I need to find a place that makes it fresh...
