He is in his seventies and tech friendly. already has an i-pad...

I did see a home made tartan i-phone cover at a market the other day that was very tempting... but not sure that he would ever use it!

You can read books on the iPad though so might be doubling up a bit.
What about an iTunes gift card or choosing a few apps yourself for him?

Given that the iPad is so expensive I'm sure that something to protect it would be appreciated! you could also try the Apple smart cover http://www.ipadhut.co.uk/collections/frontpage/products/ipad-2-smart-cover which acts as a stand too.

An iTunes gift card would be great. Apps/music are a big seller with Mac people (I know)
After the tech gifts, tools are a must for men.
