Every year I have a lot of trouble buying christmas presents for my father. He likes what I get him but he hardly uses the things.
I got him some movies he loved and he still hasn't watched any. I got him computer games, which he used and there aren't any games he is into right now.
He has plenty of tools.
I have absolutely no clue what to get him. I ask him what he wants and he says he doesn't know or that he doesn't want anything.
Please can you guys give me some gift ideas? Thanks

How old is he? Is he retired? Is he alone or married? Does he have any hobbies?

Although it is not the most original thing I usally give my dad a gift certificate from a store he likes. I also like to give restaurant certificates so he can go out to dinner with my mom.
If he likes it maybe theater/concert or museumtickets could be fun too.

Yep...gift cards are always a safe bet. My parents collect DVDs, so rather than pick any out, they usually get gift cards so they can go buy movies they don't already have. My dad likes to golf, so I've given gift cards to a golf store. Whatever interests your dad has, get a gift card that will support his interests. I think it's safe to assume that, since he's your dad, it doesn't matter too much to him. He'll be happy with anything you do/get for him.

Gift cards re great - they're much better than something you don't like or having to return something! Teenagers love gift cards - they love to shop!

Last year, I thought i'd do something a bit different from buying dad shirts from Marks & Spencers or aftershave. So I commissioned an oil portrait of him and mum from a company called Fabulous Masterpieces. He was so touched and it now hangs in their living room. It was obviously pricer than buying clothes but it's also more special too.

This might sound cheesy, but three years ago my wife got me a t-shirt made at Cafepress with a picture of my son and it's my most cherished piece of clothing. After many washes the picture is fading, so I asked her to have another one made for me! I'm 37 and my son is 4, but I'd still wear one in 13 years and I bet your dad would too.

Usually you can get one of these teeshirts made at a mall!

I gave my boyfriend for last christmas a beer brewing starter set. It's not very expensive, and everything is in it to keep him for some weeks satisfied. It was a very succesful present!
If he's into DIY, he may be interested in some power tools. Bosch make a DIY range that use the "Skil" Brand. It's very good - Bosch quality without the price tag.
Some the the cheapest I have found are at custompowertools.co.uk/christmas-gifts-c-518.html

Does your father like writing? If so, you could get him a fountain pen.

I second the fountain pen! I'd wanted a Waterman pen for years but felt it was too self-indulgent to buy one for myself, so my wife surprised me with one at Christmas a few years ago and over the years she's bought me some more for my collection. I love them all and I think they're a great gift. Levenger.com has some great gifts like pens, book covers, wallets, and other reading and writing related gifts. That's where my wife got most of my pens.
DVDs? My dad likes them...

A few weeks ago I had no clue what to buy for my dad. He is 50 as yours and doesn’t have a real hobby. He likes to read sometimes and travel a bit. And not so far I was lucky to find 2 Christmas gifts ( http://www.gettingpersonal.co.uk/). But I haven’t decided yet which one to buy (either a personalised gift book full of quotes about Dads or a leather travel journal which will make his travelling more convenient). Brokendreams4905, you can also advise your father to start travelling by giving him this leather travel journal. :presents2:

If your father likes fruit there are several websites out there that will send a fruit basket to your dad every month with different varites of fruit. Great healthy gift that give all year long

Bottom line...speaking AS a father, my children could give me ANY gift, and I would be thankful. What's most important to me is NEVER the gift, but the love that goes along with it. Being together as a family at the holidays. THAT'S priceless.
I used to be like you - got him things I thought he would like, but he never actually used!
In the last few years, I've gotten him gift cards to restaurants he likes - like Starbucks and Subway. I know that sounds lame, but he is always very practical, so he appreciated the gift in that he didn't have to pay for a place he regularly frequented.
I also got him a waterpick last year (it's like flossing your teeth - but with a sharp stream of water) and he really liked that!
Dad always likes practical gifts! I don't know if your dad is the same, but maybe you should try that this year!
Yes, dads are some of the toughest family members when it comes to gift ideas. :-D
If your dad doesn't have that many hobbies, maybe you can get him something practical that he will use during his everyday routine. What are his daily activities? Give him something that he can definitely use.

I'm 51 and I don't want anything exactly like your Dad....But trust me get him something cool, like go to a gold/coin shop and buy him some silver eagles or if you have the money a small gold coin.. It is something he will respect because it is true value...And I promise in the long run he will end up giving it back to you...And if he is a fan of the television show meteorite men go buy him a meteorite, they can be anywhere from $25 to thousands..What about great tickets to a sporting event for one night...good luck

For the past three years I have put together a bound and published photo book for my parents for Christmas. I ask my siblings to send me all of their photos from the past year and I get any pictures we have from different family activities. Then a do a Year In Review for that year and create an awesome photo album. My dad talks about it all the time and is always asking me how this year's book is coming along. He says it the best gift and he looks forward to getting the photo book each year more than anything!
