Hello everyone, The crazy Canadian is back !!!!!

I hope that 2010 has been a good year for you all :)

It is once again that time of the year that I look forward to the most. Since we celebrate Thanksgiving in October here in Canada I have taken November 1st to November 8th off as vacation time to start work on the Christmas trees. On the morning of November 1st I will start to assemble the new 12' tree in the living room.
Since my previous tree took on average of 42 hours to set up every year I am figuring that this tree will take about 60 hours to complete. It is going to be an epic amount of work.

I am looking forward to the challenge and I hope that I do not fall off the ladder and break any bones.

More to come in the coming days and lots of pictures too...

Mike maybe you need to scaffold up instead of a ladder. I'd hate for you to be laid up with broke bones and everyone around you will have their trees up except you. How's that for a little holiday gloom -- I'm just a worry wart.

Gandr scaffolding would be great. I did buy a heavy duty ladder which I feel very safe on so I should be ok.

Hello everyone :) The fun is almost ready to start. I apologise in advance for the details. I had the electrician over today to give me some more juice for the tree. I now have 45 amps in the livingroom. The hydro bill is not going to be pretty lol

http://www.mikestruys.com/images/Mike/IMG_6917.JPG

http://www.mikestruys.com/images/Mike/IMG_6919.JPG

The electrician was surprised as he has never had a request to add circuits to a livingroom for a Christmas tree :)

http://www.mikestruys.com/images/Mike/IMG_6916.JPG

This is the new electric box in the livingroom. The two sockets on the left are the standard 15amp connection. The 2 sockets on the right are 15 amp splits.

Thanks for the nice comments :) It is almost 1am out here snd I have just finished taking down and packing up the Halloween decorations. I managed to hurt my lower back on Friday so I am moving sround here rather slow. I am hoping to have enough strength to get all of the sections of the tree hoisted into position by lunch time. Pictures to start in the morning once I get some sleep :)

It was the day after Halloween and all through the house,
all the creatures were stirring
even that darn mouse

The dropsheets were hung from the window with care
in case the neighbours thought that a nutcase was living in there :elf1:

...well actually not so carefully. I am an idiot and bought the wrong size. The construction workers outside are having a good laugh :)

The nine foot ceilings come in handy for stacking Christmas bins

http://www.mikestruys.com/images/Mike/IMG_6971.JPG

The bottom section is in place finally after some lighting issues

http://www.mikestruys.com/images/Mike/IMG_6974.JPG

Sections 2 , 3 , and 4 are in place after fixing a bunch of dead lights and shunts. Shunts is a condition that happens when electricity does not travel properly through the string of lights. I picked up one of those Christmas light checkers and saved myself hours upon hours of work. If you see one this year and do not already have one buy one !!!

The section of tree that is in the foreground of the above picture is attached to the 7.5 ft tree stand as I get ready to hoist it to the top of the tree.

http://www.mikestruys.com/images/Mike/IMG_6977.JPG

Man I am not used to working with such a big tree. It is going to be a lot of fun as long as I do not fall lol. The picture makes it look like I was in the tree. I reached over my head and pointed the camera out from the tree.

http://www.mikestruys.com/images/Mike/IMG_6981.JPG

The top !!!

I am currently adjusting the branches and checking for burned out bulbs. I will then start work on adding another 2000 to 2500 mini lights and ornamotors followed by 500 to 1000 twinkle lights.

more pictures to come !!!!

Remember Mike, we want to see thet crystal tree topper!

I was out shopping last night and today but I did not have any luck finding a tree topper....well actually I did find one. It was an angel. It was crytstal, 18 inches tall, and around $200.
I was concerned about the weight and how I would be able to securely fasten it to the top of the tree. If it came crashing down it would smash a lot of ornaments. My wife was also not happy with the thought of spending $200 for a topper. I was also worried about getting a beating from her lol.

I'm sure it was gorgious, but you're right to worry about all those pretty ornaments. I had the whole tree fall over twice! The first time - a real tree - just didn't have a straight trunk. It fell over while we were away for a few days and broke "Our First Christmas Together" ornament! Luckily, I had two of the same ornament! The second time was an artificial tree - the built-in stand broke and the tree toppled! I lost 6 ornaments then and, you guessed it, the other "Our First Christmas Together" ornament! It was only up a few days, so I had to buy another tree and re-do the entire process! This time, I kept the acrylic sleeve and replaced the shattered ball! Its not the same, but better than nothing!

not a very nice picture of the poor owl lol

http://www.mikestruys.com/images/Mike/IMG_img2.JPG

I picked these ornaments up from Homesense. The crystal snowflake was really nice but there was only one left. I would have bought more of them.

I also picked up a few more ornaments from some other stores on Sunday.

Jeannette and I were going through the bins and I found a bin full of ornaments for the crystal tree lol so it appears that I am going to have a few more hours of work before that darn tree is finally finished.

Jeannette and I also put up 3 more trees including the infamous Black tree which brings the count to 5 trees over 6'. We have 2 more trees to go. One is a 5 foot blue theme tree and the final one which does not really count as a tree as it is 2' tall will be my Star Wars tree.

More pictures of the other trees and decorations to come later on today.

Looks Great!!

I actually thought of you today when I was in Macy's. They had some clear glass bird ornaments and I thought "Crazy Mike would love these!". It was kind of weird since I've never met you. The only other time I've done that was when I saw a Jim Shore Nativity set and thought of Marhsmallow world. Now here's where it gets freaky. I used to live in Toronto, and Marshmallow world used to live in DC. Cue Twilight zone music!:carols:

Thanks everyone for all of your comments :) I still have more work to do on the big tree but it is too dark outside when I get home so I will complete it this coming weekend. Tonight I am going to work on the staircase. I have an idea and Jeannette gave me the thumbs up to proceed. Lots of decorating left to do in the family room, dining room, and kitchen. We are thinking about getting a real tree. I used to buy one every year when I was in my last house years ago and I still have all of the ornaments for it.

I have no idea what I am going to do for outside lights this year.

It is going to be a busy 2 weeks leading up to Dec 1st. Dec 1st is the the date that the boss wants everything completed by :home: I will finally be able to relax and enjoy the lights.........until the hydro bill arrives lol

It is a big house with a lots of room and possibilites Mike. My garden is small which is fine with me. My wife was experimenting with the lights on the tree this morning. I have set the tree up where I can switch the tree on using its original 1500 lights or with all 5300 lights. Here is a shot of a dimish crystal tree that turned out decent:

12-16-2010, 04:29 AM
Jordan the big tree is located in the livingroom which I have not bought any furniture for as of yet. The kitchen and family rooms are a good distance away and those are the rooms where my wife and I spend the most amount of time. I would have really loved it if that tree was visable from there. My neighbours that live in front of me to right called me over a couple of days ago to show me the view that they have of the tree from their living room which is located in the second floor of their house. The tree is in full view and shimmers from that distance because of all the twinkle lights. At least someone is getting to really enjoy the tree this year :home:

I was very happy with the first year of the new 12 foot tree. It was a lot of work but was well worth it. I have already picked up more items for the tree as well as more lights on boxing day. I went the purple tree up and a few other indoor lights as we enter the dog days of winter. I also left 2 potted Christmas connected that will be on until late March.

Mike, I thought of a beautiful tree skirt that I saw years ago that would be so gorgeous under your tree. It was a white and crystal themed tree. They had put mirror tiles under the tree out past the width of the tree, then they had put white lights, topped that with white tule and sprinkled sparkly snow around. They had an antique wicker baby buggy to one side with packages in it. It was lit and the mirrors caught the reflections of the lights and ornaments. It was the most magical tree surround I have ever seen and I just think of it ever time I see your tree.
